Important new updates which we’ll see in the new version include an upgraded homepage, improved URL review page, improved tag page, and better web stumbling with Mass Share. The homepage will finally lose the huge, unnecessary header image, at least for logged in users; it will also bring you content based on your interest, something akin to Digg’s recommendation engine, done the StumbleUpon way. Not happy with the results? Check or uncheck various topic boxes in the upper right corner as you see fit.

Other changes include clickable tags on the URL review page, and some minor upgrades to the tag page as well as something called mass share, which hopefully won’t turn StumbleUpon into a massive spamfest.

All of this will be enabled during the next few days, with users being able to choose between the old and new design.

The small Firefox add-on Quote URL Text adds a new entry to the context menu of the web browser. The Quote Text entry can be used to copy the selected text and the url of the page to the Clipboard. This saves the step of having to copy the url separately when quoting text on a web page.

The Firefox add-on comes with a few options to include additional information like the title of the page and the date the page was visited. There is even a separate tab for advanced formatting options which allows for additional format changes.

The add-on seems to have a bug when pressing the context menu entry without having selected text before. The error does not have any bad effects though other than having to click on the OK button to get rid of it.

It would be nice if the developer of the add-on would include a few more options. Some interesting ones would be the use of a url shortening service and the ability to add html code to the formatting. One could for instance create a valid html link pointing to the url of the page with the link as the anchor.

Today Yahoo announced a premier rival to Google’s universal search dubbed as Yahoo Glue. in the US. Quite simply a search result page, but the interesting fact about it is with the content on the page.

The page displays content from multiple internet sources such as from Wikipedia, Yahoo Shopping, Yahoo Answers, blog search results (from Google) and YouTube etc etc, giving the reader a wide and diversified range of topics, from news to reviews and updates all on a single platform.

You could look at the picture above, and see that Bill Gates review as shown on Wikipedia, some videos of him, pictures and other content.

It’s interesting that people would adapt this to their daily lives. Seems quite useful for saving time doing multiple queries on the same topic.

They are all tech news agregators and share the same template and architecture but each has a different focus.

Mobility Beat (m.mobilitybeat.com) gathers the latest mobile industry and handset news from several dozen sites including All About Symbian, Phone Scoop, Engadget Mobile, Gizmodo, jkOnTheRun, MobileBurn and many lesser known blogs including Wap Review. The site's attractive front page lists the title of each item together with the site's logo. Items posted in the last hour are marked with a blue dot. You can filter the items to include only a articles covering a  specific topic like "Android" or "Windows Mobile".

Clicking a headline leads to a summary page which has options to go to the full article on the site where it was published, view a mobilized version or add the item as a social bookmark on PhonFavs.  MobilitBeat uses PhoneFav's own transcoder which is fairly basic.  It does a good job of reformatting pages as a single column but does not split large pages or resize images.  Mobilized pages from image heavy sites like TechCrunch may be too large to load on phones with basic Wap browsers.  My suggestion to anyone building a site like this, is to use Google's transcoder rather than rolling your own.  Google's works, it's free and Google doesn't seem to mind.

Tech News Tube (m.technewstube.com) shares the same basic design and features as MobilityBeat but it's TOPIC is general tech news and its sources are the usual suspects like Ars Technica, Digg, Engadget, GigaOM, Gizmodo, Slashdot, The Register, Tom's Hardware and VentureBeat.

Mac Hash (m.machash.com) Is all things Apple, with the freshest stories pulled from the Apple Faithful's favorite sites: AppleInsider, iLounge, MacNN, MacRumors, Macworld, TUAW and over a dozen more.

The other new site is from Salvador Gonzalez whose SitiosWAP, is one of the most popular Spanish language mobile web portals.  Salvador has just released an English language edition of SitiosWA.

The focus of SitiosWAP is to provide a mobile directory aimed primarily at the Hispanic audience, with sites selected on the basis of the quality of their information and services. There are extensive listings of mobile properties from and about each of the Latin American countries and Spain as well as links to Spanish editions of major US and International mobile news, sports, travel and information sites

The new site, english.sitioswap.com has an English user interface and lists and links to sites in both English and Spanish.  It seems like a good destination for someone who is bilingual but whose Spanish is not quite as strong as their English and for anyone  learning Spanish.

Traditional search, is, of course, link-based. The problem is, sites can be linked to places that people no longer are interested in, so the link stays in the search result for perhaps years where nobody is actually paying attention to it.
