It isn't so much the technology behind Zumobi's free app Ziibii that refreshes RSS on the iPhone and iPod touch as it is its presentation. Ziibii, which means 'river' in Algonquin*, extends the metaphor to depict posts from your various RSS feeds as rafts floating along a stream of information.

Watching posts float by is fun concept--for a few minutes at least--and one that's heightened by the fact that stories, photos, and friends' status updates appear in random order as a round-up of all your RSS subscriptions.

Ziibii's feed flexibility is good, but not great. Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube are represented, and you'll also be able to add presets from Ziibii's list of popular sites or add your own favorites. Hopefully soon, Ziibii will make it easy to select more popular sources and aggregators, as does Viigo's thorough RSS reader for other platforms.

Of course, not everyone appreciates this 'blended' view, nor the unconventional current-cum-display. My Type-A fellows can escape to a listed view of feeds and flick in either direction to see more mish-mashed headlines. When you're ready to read up on one feed at a time, the Filter button temporarily hides stories from all but your selected source.

Ziibii earns brownie points for including an in-app browser when you want to read a full article, and for being able to post stories to Twitter or e-mail them to a contact.

With the exception of a small library of feeds, Ziibii is an excellent and creative alternative to your iPhone's RSS reader.

*Fun fact: The 'ssippi' in 'Mississippi' is derived from 'zibi.' The etymology according to Wikipedia: "(cf. Illinois mihsisiipiiwi and Ojibwe misiziibi, "great river," referring to the Mississippi River.)"

For one, LittleShoot is starting off by serving as a search index for services that already have billions of files, like YouTube, Flickr, and yes, LimeWire. Thus, searching for just about anything will yield a plethora of results that you can download right to your computer. LittleShoot includes its own player too, so as a video or song is downloading, you can view and listen from the browser.

Speedy Downloads

Once those files are downloaded, they become part of the p2p network that is LittleShoot. Like other p2p services before it, LittleShoot works by downloading pieces of content from other users that have a given file, in the most efficient way possible. The service is optimized not just to find the most nearby computers with the file, but also defaulting (when possible) to users on the same ISP to further pump up the download speeds.

Anonymous Publishing

Publishing files to LittleShoot is also exceptionally easy. You simply browse your hard drive and select the files you’d like to upload. You can add tags to your files to help improve the search index. You can access your files from a “Publish” tab on the site, where you can edit, open, or delete them. LittleShoot requires no registration, which should give users some sense of anonymity in uploading their files (of course, whether copyright holders demand IP addresses at some point is another issue).

Turning Twitter into a p2p Platform

Although not live yet, another big feature LittleShoot has in the works will essentially turn Twitter into a file sharing service. When you upload files, you’ll have the option to tweet a link to them, which in turn will be tremendous viral marketing for LittleShoot while significantly improving the performance of the p2p network, since files will be hosted on more and more computers as they get downloaded.

For Developers

LittleShoot also plans to offer tools to external developers, so “any site can include our javascript library and create a p2p YouTube, for example, but where flash files stream just as if they weren’t p2p,” says co-founder Adam Fisk.

Why Are They Doing This?

There are already a ton of p2p download services, many of which are under constant attack by copyright holders and industry groups. Essentially, Fisk and his team think file sharing has evolved in the wrong direction in the Web 2.0 world.

“People flocked to put their videos and photos on sites like YouTube and Facebook, and those sites now control an astonishing percentage of our digital content. Corporate ads are slapped on personal videos. Privately shared content is taken down due to bogus copyright claims. Sharing has become synonymous with forsaking one’s right to manage one’s own content,” the company says.

LittleShoot could certainly shake things up, and given how long Limewire has managed to survive, I wouldn’t bet against it being a new disruptive force in p2p file sharing with some staying power.

Use explicit data binding on the form

The Output service merges the form data with the form design before rendering the form. If the form uses a data connection to retrieve the form data, you should explicitly bind the form fields and subforms to data items explicitly. Explicit data binding causes the Output service to immediately match data nodes with form fields. If you use Normal binding, the Output service follows a set of rules to determine data node and form field associations. Normal binding requires more processing time than explicit binding. Note: When a form field is not bound to an item in the data source, set the Default Binding property of the field to None so that the Output service doesn’t attempt to find an associated data node. See To remove a binding.

Embed fonts only when necessary

Embedding fonts in PDF forms increases the file size, and so, increases the time required to process the form. You do not need to embed fonts if the fonts reside on the target printer that the Output service sends the form to. When possible, use fonts that reside on the target printer in your form designs so that you don’t have to embed them.

If you need to embed fonts, avoid using OpenType fonts when the target printer uses PCL as the print stream. PCL printers rasterize OpenType fonts, resulting in large print files and longer print times.

Use Incremental Loading

Merging very large amounts of data with a form design can cause the LiveCycle ES server to run out of memory. If you are using multi-record data sets, you can configure the Output service to load and merge one record of data at a time. This incremental (lazy) loading of data avoids running out of memory because only one record is stored in memory at one time.

Both the generatePDFOutput and generatePrintedOutput operations can perform incremental loading. On the process diagram, you configure the Batch properties (in the PDF Output Options property group) of either operation to define the data items that comprise a record of data. You can use the Record Name property or the Record Level property to define the record. (See generatePDFOutput and generatePrintedOutput in LiveCycle Workbench ES Help. To enable incremental loading, you also need to configure the form to enable incremental loading. Form designs that include the <xfa:datasets> element prevent the Output service from performing incremental loading. You need to remove the datasets element and all of its child elements from the form design. Use the XML Source view in Designer to remove the datasets element. Orb, an iPhone app that ships for $9.99 and streams music from your home computer and television programming from a TV tuner card over internet, is now available at the App store. The app streams movies on your media center PC to your iPhone remotely, so you could watch your favorite TV program while plowing your lawn. However, as ironic as it may sound the app only works with PC-based content and tuner cards. Mac and Linux users would have to hold on to their breadth at least for now.

livecliq is an application that allows you to record video on your iPhone and/or stream video from your iPhone to livecliq.net. When you first open livecliq, it will ask to use your current location after that, you will be asked for your Token number. To receive a token number you must go to livecliq.net/download. Here you will need to sign up for an account. Once you have signed up for an account, you will need to enter your phone number (your full phone number 1-555-555-555) and then select download. They will then send a text message, that contains a link, to your iPhone. It only takes a few seconds to get the text message. Once you receive the text message you can select the link in the text. This will bring you to a page that will contain your Token number. Now, you can go back into livecliq on your iPhone and enter your token number.
