A TV set-top box manufacturer, TVonics, has advised UK consumers not to dump their TV sets as it further dampens the chances of environment betterment. As the UK plans to move to full digital broadcast, another 8 million TV sets are estimated to be sold this year, and with every purchase - an old one will be dumped.

This can be avoided as old TV sets can be converted to digital for less than £40, and adding a little more money can bring the program recording option. TVonics Director Andy Carr states:

It’s just madness to throw away perfectly good TVs when they have plenty of life left in them. The enormous publicity around digital switchover has meant that many people now wrongly believe they have to upgrade their entire television to get all the digital channels from Freeview. They could save themselves a fortune, and save the planet at the same time. All that’s required is a small Freeview box and you can access up to 40 channels of free digital television on any old TV. And with a digital TV recorder they can even build a library of up to 250 hours of their favorite shows.

Tivo has a new mobile site at m.tivo.com that lets you program you Tivo using your phone wherever you are.  That's not all it does either, Tivo Mobile also provides a television programing guide that can be used even if you are not a Tivo subscriber.  Just enter your zip-code and provider and Tivo Mobile will list daily favorites and  let you search for shows.  Show listings include time, channel, synopsis, cast list, ratings and an "If you like this..." link to the recommendation engine.  Unlike most other online guides. there is no hour by hour grid.

Tivo Mobile appears to be US only.  At least it wouldn't recognize Canadian postal codes.  But then again may be it's doing IP sniffing and knows I'm not in Canada.  If you get this to work north or south of the border (or in Taiwan or Australia) I'd love to hear about it. Source: MobileCrunch

But first things first. To shorten an url one would simply head over to the Shrinkomatic website and paste the url in the form on the main page. The service creates a unique short url in the form shrinkomatic.com/xyz which will redirect to the original url. This is definitively not the shortest url for an url shortening service but any name that is easy to remember should be fine for most users because that’s what url shortening is all about.

If you sign up for an account you can manage all the urls that have been created with the service. The list does contain a very nice and maintainable overview of the created urls. It also provides access to statistics detailing how many times the link was accessed (url trackin).

The unique feature are special urls for websites. Special urls are located at their own subdirectory of the website. While this does not necessarily different to creating a single link to a website it does provide the site owner with additional statistics.

The site owner will see all links that point to his website by all users of the service. That’s an excellent way of keeping track of the links if the service is used a lot.

Daniel has some great plans for the service. Users will be able to export their links to txt or csv and also share their links with others. He has more in the pipeline but some features are to unique to be spilled yet.
