Nano Antivirus is a nanotechnology in the malware industry. Why? It is incredible coincidence between the name and pattern of this malware that Nano Antivirus finds a hole of nano scale in the protection system of targeted computer to perform its trialware installation. This may require to remove Nano Antivirus even in case you have reliable firewall installed.
Why remove Nano Antivirus if disregard its unfair and aggressive installation?
This is the program that either attacks users online asking to buy it or trialware of Nano Antivirus is installed with viruses, trojans, spam, hidden link technique etc. The trialware is extremely dangerous; it includes files that generate orders acceptable for Windows. Tests have shown their impact:
- data erasing;
- System Registry contamination.
Music Player Daemon (MPD) is a server that allows remote access for playing music in various formats and managing playlists. It makes a great desktop player with frontend options (Qt, GTK, ncurses, Windows, and Web clients are available). It is also appropriate as a console player that is scriptable, and is especially useful if X is restarted frequently. A set of rapid development tools for clients are being developed and include a C library, Python module, PHP class, Perl module, and Java Class. The goals are to be easy to install and use, to have minimal resource requirements, to be stable and flexible, and easy to interface.

This includes more use of Glib to remove
duplicated functionality. The old ALSA buffer_time

added to control how symlinks are treated (this
fixes a regression). Fixes were made for more
Internet streams. Other bugs were fixed.

A traditional watermark is a variation in the thickness of paper that is visible under certain conditions. Watermarks have been used for security purposes for a long time. They have also been used by paper manufacturers as some indication of quality.

In the digital age, watermarks are defined in a different way. There are basically two types, used for different purposes.

Visible Watermarks

Visible watermarks are simply pieces of text or images which are overlaid on the main image either for marketing purposes or to discourage unauthorised copies. Sometimes these watermarks are also used for censorship.

Many stock photograph sites use visible watermarks to prevent the theft of images, and butcher the images to the point where they are not worth attempting to purloin. Some sites show thumbnails without watermarks, and then surprise you with crosshairs in the larger versions.

A local one I sell images through in New Zealand, mychillybin for instance, does this. (A chillybin is a thing you take with you to the beach to keep your cold drinks in)

Some folks like to add either informational or annoying watermarks to images on photo sharing sites such as Flickr. Personally I find this as annoying as people tagging buildings in the city streets, but I can understand the motivation.

Invisible Watermarks

At first glance this seems patently absurd. What’s the point in a watermark you cannot see? But there is technology available which can insert information into an image which cannot be seen, but can be interrogated with the right software. You can’t prevent the theft of your images this way, but you can prove that the image that was stolen was yours, which is almost as good.

I’m going to stick with visible watermarks today.

Tagging your images

So how can you add watermarks to your images? Easy.

You can do this either online or using an application on your PC. The online options tend to be easier. The offline ones tend to be more comprehensive.

Online, one of the simplest options is PicMarkr.

Upload up to five of your images from your PC, or grab them from Flickr first. You can optionally resize the images as well, but if you have a way to do that before you upload them, the whole thing will be much faster.

PicMarkr can apply text, image or tiled watermarks.

Insert the required text, change the font colours and transparency if necessary, and choose which corner of the image you want the watermark in. I’d be ever so grateful if you didn’t put them in the centre. I’m sticking with the Kiwi spelling, by the way. I hope you can keep up.

Click continue.

You can download the images again, or move them to Flickr.

Browse to the image you want to use for a watermark. Bold and simple is best.

Click the Upload button.

Decide on the location within the image for the watermark, and click Continue.

Download or transfer the results.

I’d be reluctant to use this one unless I was feeling awfully paranoid, or had a desire to get into marketing in a big way.

Tiled watermarks are repeated in a pattern all over the image. You again have the choice of text or image, and it all works the same way as the options above.

Alternative sites providing similar functionality include:

If you prefer to apply tiles to your images offline, there are a number of options. I usually fall back on my friend IrfanView, but there are many options, including a not-for-free pro version of PicMarkr just for Windows.

A word of warning. It’s very easy in Irfanview to accidentally watermark an entire folder of images, overwriting your original files. No, I haven’t done that. My sins are far greater. But I’ve seen it done. Copy your images to another folder, and only overwrite those ones. Do it now!

You can easily apply text watermarks this way, with a great deal more control over the font, placement, colour, alignment and transparency.

Just fire up Irfanview and browse to the images you want to deal with. Hit the ‘b’ key on the keyboard or choose File | Batch Conversion from the menu. Select the files to which you want to apply a watermark, and then click the advanced button. If you saw my post on adding borders to images a couple of weeks ago then you might have already been in here. This time we want to take a look in the “Add overlay text” option.

As you can see, there are a number of options that you can use to set the watermark up exactly as you want it. Let’s work through them quickly.

X-Coord and Y-Coord are the offset, in pixels, from the start corner. Margins, if you like. Width and Height are the size of the usually invisible box the text sits inside. Start Corner is the same as the alignment options we set in PicMarkr, except that there is, thankfully, no centre option.

Add your watermark text in the box, appending date, time and a copyright symbol if required.

Irfanview has one outstanding feature that might be of use to you here. It uses placeholders and can change the watermark for each image. As a simple example, you can put the text ‘$N’ in the text box, and each image will be watermarked with its own filename. Click the Help button for more info.

Adjust font size, colour and alignment as you please, then click OK to return to the advanced settings page. After checking that you haven’t inadvertently left any other options turned on, click OK again to return to the Batch Conversion page.

Take a moment to think through the options you’ve chosen, make sure you’re not overwriting anything you shouldn’t, and click Start Batch.

That’s it. You’re a star.

Metadata

One more note. Another way to tag your images with your information is through the use of metadata. You can’t see that in the image itself, but many photo viewers can show you the information. I’ll cover that another day, I promise.

If someone has stolen your images, would you know? Take a look at TinEye to see. It’s not the most comprehensive tool out there, but for instance when I ask it to look for my most popular image on Flickr, it tells me that four other websites (none of which I authorised) are using the image.

What else do you use? And what sorts of watermarks do you add? What sorts of unauthorised adventures have your images been on?

Apple is pushing for wider third-party adoption of its new Mini DisplayPort display connector by offering free licensing of the specification, Monday reports said.

In an updated licensing note, the Cupertino-based company said its MiniDisplayPort is designed for “systems where space is at a minimum, such as portable computers or to support multiple connectors on reduced height add-in cards.”

The news follows last week’s uproar by MacBook users who complained of problems watching videos on monitors that didn’t support the DisplayPort protocol.

Along with supporting larger displays (such as Apple’s new 24-inch Apple Cinema Display), Apple’s Mini DisplayPort includes High-Bandwith Display Content Protection (HDCP), a specification designed to prevent illegal copying of high-definition content.

Apple later released an updated version of QuickTime permitting HDCP videos to display without authentication.

The current example of keyboards outpacing brainwaves has emerged from a storm of posts on various sites, mostly tracing back to security analyst/Washington Post writer Brian Krebs and AppleInsider's Aidan Malley. Both pointed to a "recently published" Apple KB article that listed a trio of AV applications available for Mac OS X.

More shocking to this pair of pundits: the KB article actually went so far as to encourage Mac users to buy, install and use antivirus software -- even "multiple antivirus utilities" to prevent the spread of malware, which was trumpeted by a ZDnet headline. What now? Is Apple's security story on the marketing front now undermined by the quiet truthtelling of the support site? Should Justin Long apologize to John Hodgman? Are cats and dogs now living together? Is the BBC picking up the story (yes, unfortunately, it is)?

The relevant quote from the shiny new KB article that has caused such commotion:

Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one program to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult.

Let's be fair: Apple's prose isn't helping matters, because while we all know that "widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities" doesn't mean you should be installing multiple AV tools on your one, single Mac -- the point is that the ecosystem should have variation, making it harder for malware writers to attack the entire population with one well-crafted vulnerability -- that fine distinction appears to have been lost on some of those who encountered this "new" KB article.

This, of course, brings us to point #2: a careful reading (or really, any reading at all) of the KB item shows the "Old article: 4454" legend at the top right. Yes, Apple does sometimes update KB articles, and in this case the same exact "multiple utilities" copy has been on the support site for a while -- the article was originally published in June of 2007, and was updated simply to reflect current versioning on the Intego and Symantec AV products.

So, to sum up, Apple's recommendations have changed not a whit in 18 months. Everyone who is decrying the sad state of security on the Mac -- or, conversely, crediting Apple for waking up and smelling the coffee -- is chasing his or her cybertail with a great deal of enthusiasm. Malware on the Mac, such as there is, is still almost exclusively delivered via social engineering, so please don't install random video codecs downloaded from porn sites. That said, the commercial and free AV options for the Mac are pretty stable, and they're certainly worth exploring if you want to be a good computing citizen who doesn't relay Windows malware from friend to friend unknowingly. Read on for my top five tips when/if installing AV tools on your Mac.

Hat tip to MacDailyNews for linking the original KB article from the Internet Archive.

Continue reading Apple updates antivirus version numbers, security savants lose grip on reality

TUAWApple updates antivirus version numbers, security savants lose grip on reality originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 14:30:00 EST.
The era of the dominant windows XP OS is coming to a slow but grinding halt as Windows Vista and 7 are taking the lead. But, there are those who still prefer Windows XP Home and Office Editions, and for their sake I have created this article on its very useful and lifesaving features.

PCs over time tend to find the “need” to start exhibiting problems, whether it be minor or not. The operating system could simply have booting issues, programs not feeling up to their “usual” tasks, and/or the random error messages along with the occasional crash here and there. To try and help lessen these issues Windows XP comes with 7 different PC-life saving methods that enable us to recover from these situations that sometimes barricade us from the outside world.

The following methods do not always work, but there will be times that a lot of headaches can be avoided by learning how these methods work. In this tutorial/article I will give you a wide-ranging indication of each of these methods so that you can govern your computer a bit more efficiently.

1) Automated System Recovery (ASR)

Automated System Recovery (ASR) is an highly developed feature incorporated into the Microsoft Backup utility that will allow you to properly recover the Windows XP operating state in case of a disastrous system failure. By putting this feature to use you can effectively restore windows to a previous state from when you ran the ASR backup routine. This type of backup will first save your system settings on a floppy disk or a Compact Disc (CD) and then make a simple backup of the files you’ve specified on your PC. You can then use this ASR disk/CD to fully restore your systems settings when you choose to reinstall Windows XP.

2) Track Back With a Driver Rollback

Driver rollback is a neat feature that allows you to “rollback” a driver to its formerly installed version. This is exceptionally useful when you’ve installed a new driver for a piece of hardware install on your PC and you start having issues either with that specific piece of hardware or other devices/applications on your machine. If such a situation occurs you can remember to use Driver Rollback to rollback to the preceding driver that was installed before you upgraded it.

To attain access to the Driver Rollback feature you’ll have to double click on the System icon located in your Control Panel. Then click on the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button. This will pull up the Device Manager window where you can double-click on the piece of hardware that you had already installed and updated to enter it’s properties. As soon as you’re in the particular device’s properties section, you should click on the Driver tab. Within this tab you will see a button labeled Driver Rollback. Once you click on this button, it will ask for verification that you want to rollback the driver. Agree to this and follow the rest of the default instructions.

If you try to rollback a device whose drivers have never been updated, Windows will tell you so.

3) Last of the Known Good Configuration

Every single time you manage to load Windows XP successfully, Windows saves certain registry keys and applications settings on your PC. This way if you ever boot your computer and for some reason Windows fails to properly load, you can use the Last Known Good Configuration to boot Windows to the last known good settings

To put this configuration to use as your booting Windows, press the F8 key as Windows starts, and then select the Last Known Good configuration option. Your PC will then take the action of loading Windows using these previously saved settings.

4) Remember to Use the System File Checker

Every successful and proper version of Windows XP comes with a utility that will scan Windows system files on your PC and replace them if they seem to have been modified or mistakenly deleted. This is a very important tool as there are many viruses and malware that exist which will deliberately delete certain Windows system files.

The System File Checker uses different arguments to change its behavior as described below:

/SCANNOW - You would use this argument to make the SFC tool instantaneously check your computer for missing or distorted system files.

/SCANONCE - You would use this argument to make the SFC tool check your computer for missing or changed system files on the next reboot.

/SCANBOOT - You would use this argument to make the SFC tool check your computer for missing or imprecise system files every single ample times it boots up.

To launch SFC, click Start -> Run and enter: sfc /scannow to immediately have it run and check for the altered/deleted files.

5) Utilizing the Microsoft Backup Utility

Windows XP includes a backup utility that allows you to backup and restore data on your hard drives. Using this utility you can backup and restore personal data that you specify when you create the backup. Regular backups of your data is suggested to avoid losing that data in the case of a failure. The Microsoft Backup utility can be found in System Tools under Accessories in your Programs menu.

6) Take Into Account the System Restore

System Restore is a feature of Windows XP that allows you to fully restore your computer to a previous known working state in the event of a problem. This is done without loss of personal files or data such as word processing documents, spreadsheets, music, images, etc. This feature is enabled by default and runs in the background making backups after certain events happen on your computer. System restore functions are only available to an administrator of the computer, therefore if you are not an administrator, you will not be able to follow this tutorial.

System Restore protects your computer by creating backups of vital system configurations and files. These backups are known as restore points. These restore points are created before certain events take place in order to give you a recourse in case something goes wrong during that event.

If you would like to learn more about this feature you can read this tutorial: Using System Restore in Windows XP

7) Windows File Protection

Windows File Protection protects certain files that are essential for the operating of your computer and Windows from being overwritten, deleted, or changed. WFP creates backups of these files that it deems are essential into a directory named %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache. When WFP notices one of these files being modified in any way, it will restore that file with a copy found in the dllcache folder.

In conclusion

Windows XP comes with many features that will allow you to backup settings on your computer in case of catastrophic failure as well as prevent files being modified by malicious programs. It is important to understand how to use these programs to the best of your ability in order to have a secure working environment.

They’re now an indispensable part of my daily commuting. That’s why I was looking forward to Joost for the iPhone (free). It seemed to have the potential to provide the same kind of time-killing power and more, because of its library of content, which includes popular film and television shows. The app comes with some caveats, however, and it remains to be seen whether those limitations will prevent the app from reaching its full potential.

First strike, although it doesn’t affect users in the U.S., international iPhone owners may be disappointed in the library of available content. Unless you’re a huge fan of Naruto, which seems to make up all of the Anime video section. Many services encounter problems when trying to pick up international distribution rights for all types of media. Pandora is one high profile example, as is Hulu for video. That doesn’t mean there won’t be more content available in future. The Xbox Live Marketplace has brought video to Canada and other markets, albeit behind their American launch.

With the consumer economy in the toilet, it's no surprise the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas -- early next month -- is shrinking. The Consumer Electronics Association says it'll be smaller than the 2008 or 2007 shows, which were its biggest ever. And something unheard-of is actually happening now: discounts on hotel rooms.

CNBC's Jim Goldman: Yes, you read that correctly. Hotels on the Strip are actually slashing prices ahead of the big show. In the 15 years I've been covering these shows, I have never seen anything like this, and it may just go to show just how soft this economy really is. In years' past, hotels often jacked up their rates during the week of CES because they knew they could. Rooms that ran $75 or $125 the week before and week after CES suddenly jumped to $350, $450, or over $500. The "CES Premium" all of us stuck paying it lamented.

This year, attendees are being tempted by an unheard-of CES discount! In an email to registered attendees, the Consumer Electronics Association writes, "Those who have attended CES over the years and are accustomed to peak rates...may be pleasantly surprised when they book rooms this year." "More affordable than ever," the email adds.

The show is also offering discount airfares, free registration, and free hotel rooms for some groups, CNBC adds. But that's not enough to prevent many companies from ditching or downsizing their booths.

The economy is one problem. Another: Boring trade shows. Show us something that's actually exciting at CES next year -- besides yet another big TV, yet another Blu-ray player -- and we'll eat our words.
