Both the stocks of Symantec and McAfee has taken a nosedive in anticipation of declining sales following the freebie offering from Microsoft. Microsoft Live OneCare was probably a freebie as well but maybe Microsoft didn’t want to nudge anyone in the business; but now, they just don’t care.

In an excerpt: Following Microsoft’s announcement, Symantec and McAfee stocks took a nosedive Wednesday over concerns that the software giant would take a significant portion of their market share in the PC security space. Symantec shares fell 9.44 percent to $11.23, while McAfee’s dropped 6.62 percent to $26.68. However, Microsoft also fell 6 percent at $18.45

Microsoft, however, contends that it is not undermining either Symantec’s nor McAfee’s marketshare due to the fact that its new free download only provides protection against malware — a term referring mainly to online threats such as Trojans, spyware and other forms of malicious code.

In an ironic twist, I was browsing about a security package I was planning to buy for my new Lenovo S10, but after learning about the freebie, I decided to wait for it instead. I together with thousands of would be consumers of Symantec and McAfee might decide to wait which would contribute in their stock nosedive.

Mac users are being warned to beware of a new scam by hackers to plant a Trojan horse. RS.Plug.D is a more flexible update of the RS.Plug.A threat discovered in 2007, a security software vendor claimed Tuesday.

Like the original, the new version relies on Mac users to visit malicious porn sites, according to Intego. Unlike RS.Plug.A, this trojan software opens a security hole enabling hackers to repeatedly download files to your system.

When on a suspect porn site, visits will be shown an error message: “Video ActiveX Object Error,” followed by a message that the browser is unable to view the video file and a request to start a download.

ActiveX is usually linked to Windows-related files, not Macs. Despite that, the Web page downloads a file (often named “cleanlive.dmg”) from a remote site. Once downloaded, the file automatically launches a trojan that contacts the remote site again.

To avoid downloading the Trojan file, you must quit your browser, according to the company. Simply choosing “Cancel” returns you to the original “error” message.

Mac users can disable the Trojan by using an anti-virus application.

5. Once the Disk Cleanup program is complete, you will be prompted with the message ‘Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry’. Answer Y (Yes) and hit Enter. Reboot your computer.
6. SmitFraudFix will now check if wininet.dll is infected. SmitFraudFix will ask you whether to replace the infected file (if there’s any) ‘Replace infected
   file?’ Answer by typing Y (Yes) and hit Enter.
7. Reboot your computer to complete the cleaning process.
8. After reboot, a Notepad screen may appear containing a log of all the files
   removed from your computer. If it doesn’t appear, a file will be created called
   rapport.txt in the root of your drive, (Local Disk C:).
9. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (how to do safe mode).
10. Go to C:\Windows\Temp, click Edit, click Select All, press DELETE, and then
    click Yes to confirm that you want all the items to go to the Recycle Bin.
11. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\[LISTED USER]\Local Settings\Temp, click Edit, click Select All, press DELETE, and then click Yes to confirm that
    you want all the items to go to the Recycle Bin.
12. Reboot your computer back to normal mode. Go to Windows Update and download all critical updates.

5. If your homepage has been changed, go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > click on the General > click Use Default under Home Page. Add the your desired default homepage, then click Apply > click OK. Open a new web browser to check that you have your desired default homepage.
6. Remove SysHomePage.com/security/ Directories.
   To find SysHomePage.com/security/ directories, go to Start > My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files > Show the contents of this folder.
