File Menu Tools (via Technology Bites) is a free Windows Explorer context menu editor. The application comes with a set of tools to add new pre-configured functions to the context menu, edit the Send To menu and configure entries added by third party applications to the Windows Explorer.

The interface itself has been streamlined for ease of use. Each of the three options can be configured in their own tabs by checking or unchecking checkboxes. All of the 27 new functions are added by default after installation. They range from deleting locked files over displaying information about the size of folders to synchronizing directories. Most users will probably stick with a basic set of functions and disable the ones that they do not need. Another option would be to add all functions to a submenu for a better overview.

The commands of other applications that show up when a file or folder is right-clicked that is triggering the event are shown as well. They are divided into submenus like Drives, Folders or Printers. A click on an entry will display the context menu entries that have been added by third party applications.

Each entry can be removed to optimize the menus.

File Menu Tools provide access to separators and folders that can be added to further optimize the display of the context menu entries. It is furthermore possible to move the entries around.

File Menu Tools provide an easy way to configure and optimize the Windnows Explorer context menu entries.

I have installed the latest Nero 9.0.9.4d on my new Acer laptop running Windows Vista Business edition. I still prefer to use Nero Burning ROM to burn my discs even though they add in more bloat to every major update. All I need to do is to do a Custom installation and uncheck whatever I don’t need. Nero Vision is my favorite application in burning a download movie or TV episodes to a DVD discs. There may be other video encoding software but since I use Nero Burning ROM, I might as well install Nero Vision together for this feature.

To burn a movie or TV episode with Nero Vision, I only need to select whether I want to Make CD or Make DVD, then import the AVI videos by selecting Add Video Files, create a menu if needed, and it will automatically encode the AVI video files to VCD or DVD format which can be played on my DVD player. However, I got really frustrated with my new laptop running Windows Vista and nearly wanted to format the hard drive to install Windows XP because Nero Vision just crashes when I import an AVI video file.

This problem has never happened on my desktop running Windows XP with Nero 8 but happened on the clean Windows Vista SP1 with all latest hotfixes and Nero 9.0.9.4d activated with a genuine license! At first I thought it was a bug on AMCDocBase.dll file because the APPCRASH window did say something about it. After spending an hour researching on this problem, I am glad that I found the cause of Nero Vision crashing when adding a video file.

At first I thought it had something to do with missing codecs because I did not install any codec pack on my laptop’s Acer. So I downloaded the latest K-Lite Codec Pack, installed it and tried importing the video file in Nero Vision, still the got the same Nero Vision APPCRASH window.

I checked the Nero Vision settings from Default Video Options and found something that could have caused the problem. In General tab, the video mode setting is blank. I went to my desktop running Windows XP with Nero 8, and found that PAL is selected for the Video Mode. I did the same on my Acer laptop running Nero 9, and voila! Nero Vision no longer crashes!

I don’t know why Nero 9 didn’t automatically set a video mode for me this time when there’s no such problem in Nero 8. An empty video mode causing Nero Vision to crash is really sloppy programming. They could have included a prompt asking the user to set the video mode if it is not configured rather than not telling anything at all and leaving Nero Vision to crash.

Anyway, to configure a video mode in Nero Vision, click the More button and then click Default Video Options button. The General tab should display, and select the video mode according to your country.

Some country uses PAL and some NTSC. NTSC is the video system or standard used in North America and most of South America. In NTSC, 30 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 525 individual scan lines. PAL is the predominant video system or standard mostly used overseas. In PAL, 25 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 625 individual scan lines.
Gargoyle is an interface for small, widely
available routers such as the Linksys WRT54G
series and the La Fonera. It provides
functionality above and beyond what the default
software provides including sophisticated dynamic
DNS, quality of service, and bandwidth monitoring
tools. The primary goal is to provide a polished
interface for these advanced tools that is at
least as easy to configure as any existing
firmware. This project is based on top of OpenWrt,
but unlike other Web interfaces for OpenWrt it
places a strong focus an usability and is meant
for average users, not just power users.

Changes:
Improvements include the addition of an access restriction section to allow filtering of network resources by IP, port, protocol, and/or Web page URL. A bandwidth quotas section has also been added, which allows the setting of fixed limits for upload/download bandwidth of users on the network. Finally, the QoS implementation has been improved dramatically to better handle layer 7 matching. Multiple minor bugs have also been fixed.

Active Facebook developers are aware of the relatively long application settings page for new and existing applications. According to Brent Goldman, that page will soon be history. Goldman writes that Facebook has “redesigned the application settings editor to help you create and configure your applications much more easily. We’re launching it soon, and you’ll be able to switch back and forth between the old and new editors for a period of time, much like how users could switch between the old and new profiles earlier this year.”

While it isn’t a significant shift, it’s nice to see that Facebook is paying attention to the little things when it comes to improving their platform. While there may be a long list of things that should be added to the platform, the small things can often times makes a huge difference. There are also some new features that will be added to the application settings editor.

There will now be the ability to toggle between a live mode and what is now being renamed “sandbox mode”. These settings will also now be displayed within a tabbed interface. I wonder if group and page settings will soon follow with this new design style. There will also be new features added shortly including “Feed, the data store API, and translations”.

What does this mean for the average user? Absolutely nothing! Everything will remain as is. This is a simple change for application developers.

Some questions

Is it easy to install and configure?

In their own words

“Track your mobile carbon footprint. Reduce and offset it. Inspire others to do the same. All from your phone. And all for free.”

Why it might be a killer

Stopping climate change is a real concern in the days we are living through, and any contribution to the cause is a welcome addition.

What it does

In the words of the five-men team behind it, Ecorio enables you to “track your mobile carbon footprint. Reduce and offset it. Inspire others to do the same. All from your phone. All for free”. This is a very apt definition of what this app sets out to do, and the issues it attempts to redress.

Once you have installed Ecorio, it will run in the background of your phone and keep tack of the car and bus journeys you undertake. A summary will be eventually produced, and then you can set down to buying offsets in relation to your carbon footprint figures.

That is, once you have figured out what is your personal contribution to global warming from activities like driving, you can fund activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions to balance out the situation.

In addition to that, Ecorio makes it possible to you to find out public transit and carpooling information for each trip, and find the best routes available in an instant fashion.

As a conclusion, this is a well-developed application that deserves your attention if only because of the important role it can play out as regards stopping climate change.

Link: http://www.ecorio.org
Our Review: http://www.killerstartups.com/Mobile/ecorio-org-track-your-mobile-carbon-footprint

Back In Time is a simple backup system for the GNOME desktop inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.

We start the Ghacks Christmas Giveaway with a bang. Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is the flagship product of Kaspersky and it is up for grabs for five lucky commenters. All you need to do to enter the giveaway is to leave a comment. Please spread the word so that your friends, family and colleagues can enter the giveaway as well).

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 includes the Kaspersky Antivirus components but extends the protection of the computer system beyond that. At the core stands it antivirus and anti-malware engine that is protecting the system from those threats. The Internet Security 2009 suite adds to that a two-way personal firewall, content filtering and data & identity theft protection.

Several new features have been integrated into the 2009 edition of the software. This includes the ability to restore previous system settings after cleaning malware, security ratings for unknown applications, a virtual keyboard to protect against phishing and keyloggers and the automatic access restriction (user data folders) for unknown applications.

Installation of the software suite should not be problematic although it requires the uninstallation of other applications of its kind before the installation can be completed (Multiple firewalls or antivirus programs can interfere with each other). Inexperienced users can and should keep the automatic settings while experienced users can configure the layers of protection manually. It does not make much sense for example to enable the Anti-Dialer module if the user is connecting to the Internet over a network.

The interface of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 has been redesigned. It is divided into the four blocks Protection, Scan, Update and License.

Protection: Various protection layers can be analyzed and configured in this entry. It is also providing access to various tools like the creation of a Rescue Disk, a Security Analyzer or Network Monitor.

Scan: Perform a quick or full scan of the computer system.

Update: Will check and download updates

License: License information. Will list the validity period of the application

Inexperienced users will love the automatism of the software program. The initial scan of the system will add automatic rules for most applications that are installed on the system. Kaspersky Internet Security did add applications like Firefox, Thunderbird or Teamspeak to the list of trusted applications which in turn meant that no “Do you want to permit” windows where launched when the application was started.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 is compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista. A trial version is available that can be used for 30 days without restrictions.

The Giveaway:

Kaspersky gave us five program suites and we will give all five to you. Just post a comment before December 2 12:00 CET and you are taking part in the Giveaway. Make sure to include an email address so that we can contact you with the details in case that you have won.

When you delete files in your PC, they normally go first to the recycle bin. So technically, they are still around. There are cases where people recall these files and in some cases, restoring them from the recycle bin can still be done. If that were the case, then good for the use. But what if he really deletes and empties the recycle bin immediately?

Such are the cases where deleting files manually on any computer should be done carefully before doing the next thing in your mind. One cannot avoid it. For some, deleting a file is practically automatic towards accepting that they are useless. So why leave them hanging around in the recycle bin when you can free up more space for newer files?

Not all people are aware of the real use of a recycle bin. It is the primary location where deleted files fall in. But there are people who configure their recycle bin to automatically discard the files upon deletion meaning that once they are deleted, they are deleted forever. Is that a wise move? For the advanced people perhaps it is, but if you are a
...
