There is a rumor buzzing around Blog Hogwarts, Pottersphere and Snitch Seeker, three Harry Potter-focused news and forum sites, that Warner Brothers is working on an MMORPG for Harry Potter.

According to these fan-sites, Warner Brothers has said:

The notion of creating a Harry Potter multi-player online role playing game is something that we’ve been discussing at Warner Bros. for a number of years and continue to explore.

We are currently investigating the possibility of creating our own MMORPG, but unfortunately do not have any further details to share at this time.

MMORPG’s, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, are computer games where large numbers of players can participate and interact in a virtual world. Some of the most popular MMORPG’s include Age of Conan and World of Warcraft.

This rumor is obviously highly speculative, but if it turns out true, the question is whether or not it will succeed. Harry Potter as a franchise is widely popular and successful, supporting a huge industry of merchandise and accessories, but there is a possibility that an MMORPG could be subject to harsh criticism if it does not live up to fans’ high expectations.
