beta2.mux.am - Rip Videos and Convert to Any Format

What it does

Mux is a “Happy Hungry Videobot” designed to help you rip videos from the web, share your personal videos with family and friends, or send videos to your mobile device (including the iPhone). From the homepage, you simply tell Mux what video you would like to rip by entering its URL or pointing Mux to its location on your hard drive. Select which of 15+ available formats you want to convert the video to, with options including iPod, Quicktime, MPEG-4, Windows AVI, MP3 (for audio only), or Flash Video. There may be up to a few minutes delay depending on the size of your video, but for you impatient types, simply enter your email address and Mux will send you a link once the conversion process is complete. The files are only saved on Mux for one day, so you must return to the site to download your converted file promptly.

Mux is a free service for personal use only, and there is no registration required. You can use Mux to rip videos from almost any webpage, including popular sites like YouTube, Google Video, MySpace, etc.

In their own words

“Videos in, Videos Out. Mux doesn't stop, because its a bot! Mux can take any video you throw at it, chomp it up, and spit it back out again in whatever form you desire. Mux the Videobot is here to serve you, like a good little robot should. All that Mux asks is that you return regularly to keep feeding it video bytes. Yum bleep bloop bleep.”

Why it might be a killer

It’s very convenient that Mux is a one-stop site for all sorts of video conversion needs. Some similar sites only convert files from your computer or only rip files off of the web. Mux also offers a wide range of output options so you can easily play your video on many different devices, including your iPod or iPhone. Being free and sans-registration requirements should also up its popularity.

Some questions

Could Mux hold onto your videos for longer than 24 hours, perhaps if you registered for an account? What will “Power Mode” offer when that link on the website becomes active? Are there already too many other video ripping or conversion programs out there for this one to really set itself apart from the crowd?
